Institute of Egyptology

Institute

From the Nile to the Neckar: At least since the establishment of the Chair of Egyptology and the founding of the Egyptian Collection in 1910, Heidelberg has been a centre of research into Ancient Egypt, and has educated both students and the public. Since then, the Egyptological Institute with its extensive library and the Egyptian Collection have provided a window onto Ancient Egypt in the heart of Heidelberg.

Study

Our Egyptology degree programme entails learning the Ancient Egyptian languages and scripts. At the same time, our Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes focus on artefacts, monuments and cultural developments. The great variety of Ancient Egyptian sources makes the study of Egyptology both exciting and challenging. Many of our courses are also open to students of other disciplines as well as auditors.

Research

For more than a century, Egyptologists at the University of Heidelberg have been studying Ancient Egyptian culture. Over the decades, numerous research projects and studies have yielded important results on philological issues and archaeological findings, as well as on religious change and cultural developments. The Institute's current research promises further significant insights.
